About Us

Mental Health Matters society has a shared passion for improving support systems, encouraging outreach, raising awareness and alleviating the stigma which surrounds mental health amongst students and staff at the University of Sheffield.
With mental health issues affecting 1 in 4 people at some point in their lives, we believe it is important to facilitate a university community which allows individuals to openly talk about their mental health experiences. Our events, campaigns and close work with the University Counselling Service, Welfare Network and Students' Union aim to nurture this atmosphere and engage individuals in empathetic, educational and understanding discussions on mental health. We welcome new attendees at any point in the academic year - specific details of upcoming events and workshops will be published on this page

Her goals for MHM: "I would like to spread awareness in the international community of the support services offered by the university and help those who might be struggling to adapt to studying in a country with a completely different culture and language to their own."

Men's Officer

His goals for MHM: "I hope to help eradicate the stigma associated with men talking about their mental health issues. I want to prove that being emotional and talking about your feelings doesn't make you any less of a man. Mental health does not discriminate, it can affect any us us no matter what we identify as. Strength comes from opening up and allowing yourself to be vulnerable in order to obtain the support you deserve. We are not defined by our mental illness. If I am able to support even one individual who is suffering by fulfilling my role as men's officer, I will have achieved my goal."
Self goals: "I hope to learn more about myself and ways in which I can improve as an individual. I want to be a force for good in the community and discover techniques to increase my productivity within university; managing my responsibilities as men's officer as well as my degree."
